About John Leach

Christened 31 July 1891 at Morden. Actual birth date unknown.

Given that the 1841 census was conducted on 7 June 1841, he could have been 49 or 50 at the time - so down as 45 or 50 in this census return. -------------------- Not much is known about John Leach, father of Edmund and William and probably other children too.

On the marriage certificate of his son Edmund to Sarah Heath he is recorded as being an engraver, so is likely to have worked in the fabric printing industry - most likely at one of the print works along the Wandle River that runs through Wandsworth, Wimbledon, Merton, and Morden, then in surrey, now in southwest Greater London.

It is tempting to speculate that he is somehow connected to the line of Leaches that operated print works there. A possible candidate for him is John Leach, born 1791, son of Bishop Leach, the brother of John Leach who owned one of the main calico print works.

New assessment in January 2015 suggests that a best fit for John Leach is provided in the 1841 census - an engraver in Summertown, Wandsworth with wife Elizabeth and eight children. He also likely is the John Leach son of Bishop Leach.

Key aspects are:
  • This John Leach is the only engraver with appropriate name, location and dates in the census records.
  • He is in Wandsworth and subsequent census records indicate his older children were born in Wimbledon (as was Edmund Leach).
  • There is an appropriate time gap that Edmund can fit in ahead of the other children.
  • The is a son William of appropriate age (though born Surrey not Middlesex - but there are no further records of this William and no obvious trace of an appropriate William from Middlesex).
  • The is a daughter Ann, aged 15 to 19 on the 1841 census and hence with appropriate age to be the Ann Leach witness at Edmund's wedding in 1840.

The 1851 census shows Elizabeth Leach living as a widow with daughter Sarah (also moved out like Edmund in the 1841 census) Nightingale, with the younger sisters and one brother. So John died between 1841 and 1851, so we are unable to confirm his exact age - exact death date cannot be identified clearly from death records as there are several candidates in the London area.

The only marriage found of a John Leach with an Elizabeth is to Elizabeth Stevens on 30 May 1813 at St Mary, Lambeth. This seems a bit far out of the way for two people from Merton/Morden area - but not impossible.

John's of age of 45 (i.e 45 to almost 50) in the 1841 census could place him as the son of Bishop Leach (who was christened 31 July 1791 and hence maybe born a week or two before and hence under 50 years old on the 7 June date of the 1841 census). This John Leach engraver in Wandsworth appears a likely fit for Bishop's son - there is only one other contender, also in Wandsworth, also in the print trade.
