About John Mawney

John Mawney was the son of Peter Mawney and Mary Tillinghast. He was married in Providence on 29 October 1745 to Amey Gibbs, the daughter of Robert Gibbs and Amey Whipple. John was a resident of Providence, where his will is recorded and where he left a sizeable estate. In 1742 he was an ensign in the Providence County Troop of Horse, and by 1746 had become Sherriff in Providence, which post he held until his death in 1754. He had business ties with Stephen Hopkins, the future governor of the Rhode Island colony and signer of the Declaration of Independence. His will, dated 5 Jun 1754, was proved in Providence 5 Aug 1754. John and Amey had five known children.
