About John Middleton, of Seaton

Elected MP for Aberdeen.

Was a writer in Edinburgh, but entered the Army, and ultimately was given the command of the 25th Foot 17 June 1725, and the 13th Foot 29 May 1732, being made brigadier-general 1735. He sat in Parliament for the burgh of Aberdeen from 1715 (NOT 1763, and not continuously) till his death. As a young man he was a musical amateur, being one of the nineteen gentlemen performers at the feast of St. Cecilia, held at Edinburgh 22 November 1695. He purchased the lands of Seaton.

He had five daughters and two sons.

Source: The Scots peerage (1904).

NOTE: The Scots peerage lists two facts that are in conflict! He cannot have died in 1739 and been an MP from 1763 - both facts from the same paragraph. According to Records of old Aberdeen (1899) "Collonell John Midletone" was made honorary burgess of Aberdeen 4. Aug 1712. He is listed as "Of Seaton, and M.P. for Aberdeen Burghs, 1715-39." which seems much more likely, and fits with his listed burial date, 24 March 1739.

They wed in 1697 against her brothers wishes, according to Supplement to the Dictionary of the decisions of the Court of Session, Volume 4 (1826), with a final court settlement in 1702. According to The earls of Middleton : lords of Clermont and of Fettercairn, and the Middleton family (1876) they married about 1712, but this doesn't fit with the court decision of 1702 and the earlier births, all around Edinburgh where John lived, and where Elizabeth was from. The 1702 court decision also states that John's father is Dr. Middleton of Aberdeen.
