John Montomery 17, was a member of Butler's Party of 27 Settlers on the Settler Ship Fanny.

Party originated from Wicklow, Ireland.

Departure Cork, Ireland 12 February 1820. Arrival Simon's Bay, Cape Town - 1st May 1820. Final Port - Saldhana Bay - Mid May 1920.

Area Allocated to the Party : Originally to Clanwilliam, then to the Assegai Bush River, Albany

John Montgomery (1803-1878) was an 1820 Settler of Butler's party and became known as 'The Founder of Burgersdorp'.

John Montgomery, son of John M and Mary Park, was born on 12 August 1803 in Dublin, Ireland. John immigrated to South Africa as one of the 1820 Settlers. He married Susanna van Zyl and they had 14 children. John's father died in 1815. In 1832 he brought his mother, Mary Park, to South Africa. She remained in South Africa until her death on the 4th July 1854. John also located his sister Maria and her husband, George Coleman, in India where he was bandmaster for one of the regiments. He brought them to SA as well. After that he searched for his younger brother, Henry, whom he also located in India. Henry and his family also moved to South Africa.

Died, at the house of her son in Burgher's Dorp, on the 4th July, 1854, after a short confinement to her chamber, Mary Park Montgomery, widow, aged 92 years and 6 months. She came to this Colony in the year 1832, and was noted for her industry and Christianity, and was a member of the Wesleyan Society for a long time, and is much regretted by the family and friends. She was fully conscious in her last moments, and died in perfect tranquillity.
