Sir John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl was born on 6 May 1729.1 He was the son of Lt.-Gen. Lord George Murray and Amelia Murray.1 He married Lady Charlotte Murray, Baroness Strange, daughter of Lt.-Col. James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl and Jane Frederick, on 23 October 1753 at Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland.2 He died on 5 November 1774 at age 45 at Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland, drowed in the Tay, in a fit of delirium.2 His will was probated in March 1779.2 He was buried at Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland.2
He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 54th (Highland) Regiment of Foot.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) Parents: eldest son of John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl and his wife, Charlotte, 8th Baroness Strange, daughter of James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl.

(106) John, fourth Duke of Atholl, born 30th June 1755 ; died 29th September 1830. On 1 8th August 1786 he was created Earl of Strange, Baron Murray of Stanley in the Peerage of Great Britain. In 1805 he succeeded his mother in the Barony of Strange. He married, first, 26th December 1774, Jean, daughter of Charles, ninth Lord Cathcart, who died 5th December 1790, having had:

- 106(c) Edward Murray, born 11th September 1783; died 19th March 1795.

He married, second, 11th March 1794, Margery, daughter of James, sixteenth Lord Forbes and widow of John, Lord Macleod. She died 3rd October 1842, having had issue:
