About John Ordway, Sr.,

John was the fifth of eleven children of James and Ann Ordway.

He became a prominent man in the church and town affairs and settled in the part of Newbury, MA called "the Plains." He is referred to in old records as "Corporall", "Sergeant" and later, as "Captaine John Ordway" but it has not been ascertained if he took an active part in the various wars in which the colonists were engaged. His duties were confined to the garrisons of the town.

In 1681 he was a witness in the witchcraft trial of Elizabeth Morse of Newbury and also served on the jury of another witch trial.

He married Mary Godfrey in Newbury, MA on December 5, 1681. Mary's mother was the first white child born in Newbury.

John made his will on January 27, 1717-8.
