About John Ross Philip

Dr Philip’s second son was John Ross Philip who became a printer and publisher . In 1845 he moved to Port Elizabeth where he became the Editor and co-founder of the “Eastern Province Herald” one of the two oldest surviving newspapers in South Africa.

In 1859 he represented Port Elizabeth in the Legislative Assembly. He married Isabel Thomson, daughter of Thomas William Thomson and Jane Yalden who had arrived at the Cape in 1816 and 1819. The daughter of John Ross Philip and Isabel Thomson was Alice Agnes Philip who married George Leslie thus ending the Philip branch of this family on joining the Leslie branch.
