http://genforum.genealogy.com/ragan/messages/1496.html - this user and several others state that John Ragan is William Reagin's father. This user cites several primary sources for info about John's life:
Excerpts from The Annals of Newberry, page 28-35 by John Belton O'Neal ...
"The Quaker settlement was on Bush River and the Beaverdam. It extended from three to four miles on each side of the river. ..."
"When the settlement commenced, or whence came the great body of settlers, it is out of my power to say with certainty. Certain it is that ... John Reagin ... were residents of the same tract of country before or during the revolution, and were Friends or were ranked as such by descent."
From "Minutes of the county Court1785-1798" for Newberry County, South Carolina, John Ragan was appointed as the one of several road commissioners "to lay out" the road from the "Widow Reases at the head of Bever-dam Creek" to the ferry on Saluda River at June court 1786.
There have had been three lawsuits filed by different parties against him from December court 1789 to July Court 1797 in Newberry District, South Carolina.
John Ragan was listed as the head of household in 1790 Federal Census of Newberry District, South Carolina. There were one (1) white male over 16; two (2) white females all ages in the household.
It appeared that he must have died before 19 Jun 1800 in the environs of Beaverdam Creek in Newberry District, South Carolina. Death date was gleaned from John RaganÕs Intestate papers at Newberry County Courthouse, Newberry, South Carolina. (Newberry County, South Carolina Will Book "C", pages 73-75 and 80-81.)
His eldest son, Joseph Ragan, was appointed as the administrator of John Ragan's estate by the Probate Court of Newberry County, South Carolina. There was the letter of administration which was issued to Joseph Ragan. And there was the inventory and the sale for John Ragan's estate.
It is most likely that he was buried beside his wife in unmarked graves at the Reagan/Reagin family cemetery near Silverstreet, Newberry County, South Carolina.
Notes for Elizabeth Edwards: Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Edwards and Sarah (?_____?) of Frederick County, Virginia.
His wife, Elizabeth Edwards Ragan, survived. She was listed as the head of household in 1800 Federal Census of Newberry District, South Carolina. There were one (1) white male and one (1) white female 10-16; and one (1) white female 45 and up in the household.
Approximate death year was gleaned from John Ragan's Intestate Papers at Newberry Courthouse, Newberry, South Carolina. It appeared that she died after that date in the environs of Beaverdam Creek in Newberry County, South Carolina.
It is most likely that she was buried beside her husband in unmarked graves at the Reagan/Reagin family cemetery near Silverstreet, Newberry County, South Carolina.
