About John Richard Howard, Sr.
HOWARD, John Richard, M.D. February 5, 1990 marked his departure from this life. He “was born June 11, 1915 in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada to Hugh Munro and Florence Bowes Howard. After the early death of his father he was raised in Lacombe, Alberta, . Canada, where his mother taught Mathematics.
Graduated from Lorna Linda Medical School in 1944 and then served his internship at Wayne State University Hospital in Detroit from 1944 to 1945. He then moved to the Downey area where he was active in family practice from 1945 until October of 1989. He was particularly proud of the several thousand babies he delivered including his last two children, Jonathan and Holley. He was a member of the Downey Masonic Lodge. He served in the LA County Sheriff’s Posse a unit of reserve officers who ride horses during various law enforcement activities and as a flight surgeon in United States Air Force from 1953 to 1955.
In 1984 he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Besides his love of medicine and his family he was a skilled woodworker, photographer and enjoyed traveling, His gift of caring for others endeared him to all.
He is survived by wife, Kandis Holley Howard; sons, John R. Howard, Jr. M.D., Randy Howard, M.D., Brent Howard, M.D. and Jonathan Holley Howard; daughters, Susan Decker, Nancy Ott, Marsha Howard, Patrice Howard, Holley Janelle Howard; sister, Jean Crider; 81’ grandchildren. Service Friday 1:00 PM at Long Beach 3rd Ward LDS Church, 6500 Atherton.
Will be buried in Springville, Utah.
