JOHN SAWIN of Watertown was admitted freeman May 26, 1652. 

On April 1, 1653, John Sherman and his wife Martha sold lands in Watertown to George Munning, (John's wife Abigails' Father) of Boston, in behalf and for the use of John Sawin, Sr., and his son, John Sawin, Jr. John Sawin is mentioned in the will of Edward Skinner, dated December 25, 1641.

JOHN SAWIN died by suicide on 2 Sep 1690 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA. Inventory of his estate was taken on October 7, 1690, in the amount of 67.10 pounds

John Sawin [son of Robert, Roxford, Suffolk Co.] and wife Abigail Munnings came to Watertown about 1650 and lived on School Street (Great Little Watertown.) His son Munning, town clerk and treasurer, had eleven children (Harris' Epitaphs.)

Ancestor of all that bear this name in America, was son of Robert Sawin of Boxford, Suffolk Cty., England, and was in New England as early as 1650, settled in Watertown, holding the office of selectman there in 1664 and 1672. He owned a "homestall" in Watertown village and a large farm in that part of the town later set off as Weston, Mass; and besides farming he also followed the occupation of cordwainer. He died Sept. 2,1690 and the manner of his decease is thus related in the first and only number of "Publick Occurrences" printed and issued at Boston, September 25, 1690, the first newspaper ever issued in America. After this first number the sheet was suppressed by the authorities. Is as follows:

"A verry Tragical Accident happened at Water Towne, thebeginning of this Month; an Olde man, that was of somewhat aSilent & Morose Temper, but one that had long Enjoyed thereputation of a Sober and Pious Man, having freshly buried hisWife, The Devil took advantage of the Melancholy which hethereopon fell into, his Wives discretaion and Industry had longbeen the support of his Family, and he seemed hurried with animpertinent fear that he should now come to want before he dyed,though he had verry careful relations to look after him who kepta strict eye on him, least he should do himself any harm. Butone evening escaping from them into the Cow-house, they therequickly followed him, found hm hanging by a rope, which they hadused to tye their Calves withall, he was Dead with his feet neartouching the Ground."

"Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers Of New England" states John is the son of Robert Sawin and Abigail, imigrated in 1641 with mother who was a widow at the time, sold his est. at home in 1651, freeman in1652, married Abigail Munning, daughter of George Munning. He was selectman of Watertown in 1664 and 1672, and died 2 Sep 1690.
