John Sherman received from his father land at Saconett, near Dartmouth, Ma. He was a prosperous farmer and lived in Marshfield, Ma., all his life. "William Hinchman of Boston in the countey of Suffolke; and Collonie of the Massachusetts in New England in America Shoomaker . . . in consideration of eighteen pounds lawful money in New England . . . to mee in hand by John Sherman of Marshfield in the Jurisdiction of New Plymouth . . . payed . . . have . . . sold . . . unto him the said John Sherman . . . all that my dwelling house; and Tract of Land Scittuate lying and being; within the Township of Marshfield . . . about twelve acrees lying at the end of the land of Arthur Howland deceased, and adjoynes to the land of Timothy Williamson; In Witnes whereof I have heerunto sett my hand and seale this fift day of May . . . 1679. (Plymouth Co., Deeds, 26:141) The last will and testament of John Sherman, made Jul 1712: "I John Sherman of Marshfield in the County of Plimouth being at this time in health & of sound mind & memory blessed be God yet condisering the uncertainty of this prsent life Do make this my last Will & Testament in maner & form following . . . Imprimis My will is that my well beloved wife Jane Sherman shall have the use and Improvement of my housing & lands in Marshfield wheron I now Dwell during the term she shall Remain my widdow Item I give and bequeath to my son John Sherman the one half of all my lands both upland & meadow lying & being at Seipican Alias Rochester to him & his heirs forever. Item I give & bequeath to my son Samuel Sherman the other half of all my lands at Seipican aforesd both upland & meadow to him and his heirs forever. Item I give & bequeath to my son William Sherman my housing & lands in Marshfield, whereon I now Dwell to him and his heirs after his mothers decease or marriage & also my meadow & the Sedge flats I bought of the Town he therefore Paying to his Sisters the sum of twelve pounds to be equally divided amongst them, my grandchild Joseph Lapham to have his mothers Part therof. Item I leave all my money, goods & chattels to my said wife Dureing her life & what Remaine therof at her decease to be Equally Devided amongst all my Daughters & my Granschild aforesd with what I have given them already or may give them before my decease or their mother may give them after my decease so as to make them Equall as near as may be at Last -- Also I give to my said Daughters, viz Bethia Hannah Deborah Lois & Unis to them & their severall Respective heirs & assigns all my comon lands or lots in said Marshfield & Pembroke my said Grandchild to have his Mothers Part of the value therof when he shall arrive at full age; so as he Returne the Same to my Said Daughters in case he has no Issue of his own to Injoy it after his death. Item my mind & Will is that such and so many of my Daughters as shall Remaine unmarried at my wives decease shall have free Liberty to Continue to Dwell in my house untill they shall be Marryed or otherwise dispose of themselves. And Lastly I nominate & appoint my well beloved wife Jane Sherman to be sole executrix of this my last will & Testament.
