About John Silkman

DAR Ancestor #: A103589

John Silkman left Rotterdam on the ship 'Harle,' which reached Philadelphia on 1 September 1736. He is listed on the ship's manifest as John Jacob Seidemann (seide means 'silk' in German) but signed his name John Silkman upon arrival. He moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1740. From 1739 to 1748 he served as a Privateer [legalized pirate] during Colonial Wars. In 1751 he built a home which is still standing on Rte. 35 and Holly Branch Rd., Bedford, New York. John Silkman also had Revolutionary War Service, serving in the 2nd Regiment of the Westchester County Militia.
