John Smith, his wife and children were among the Wilson party of 1820 settlers, arriving on the ship "Belle Alliance". He was a boatswain for Lord Nelson in the British Royal Navy. He settled at Assegaai Bush where he farmed until his death. He arrived in South Africa at the age of 42. His wife, Rebecca, was 34 on her arrival. The Setller party lists only three children: John Hancorn (15), Thomas William (8) and William (4). However, Thomas Joseph must have been in the party at the age of 4, as he was born in 1816. At the time of his children's baptism, he was described as a storekeeper of Somerset East.
