About John Stanley, Puritan, Sailed on "Planter"

John Stanley and his brothers Timothy and Thomas embarked for New England in 1634/5. John died on passage and was buried at sea. John was likely a widower, as there is no mention of his wife, the mother of his three children who at the time were about ten, six and four years of age.

"Elizabeth Bacon, age about 71 years, testified that she came from England in a ship with Samuel Greenhill and his wife in 1634 and arrived in New England sometime in May 1634." The above was written by her son Caleb.

Mrs. Bacon does not give the name of the vessel in which they came. Winthrop's Journal dated May 14, 1634 says, "The week the court was [May 14-16] there came in six ships, with store of passengers and cattle". Evidently, the Stanleys came in one of these ships after a short, prosperous voyage. Other sources say they came over on "The Planter" - one of six ships.
