SYMONDS,

JOHN, Salem 1637, freem. Mar. 1638, had w. Eliz. and ch. beside James bef. ment.; Samuel, whose bapt. was 4 Nov. 1638; Catharine; and Ruth; and d. a. 1671. His will of 16 Aug. was pro. 19 Sept. of that yr. Catharine, m. 26 June 1657, Jacob Towne of Topsfield; and Ruth m. 19 July 1658, Job Swinnerton of Salem, and d. 22 May 1670.

John Symonds, our Immigrant Ancestor, was b. in Eng. about 1595. He came to Salem in 1636 and was made a freeman there the next year. He was a joiner and lived first on the western corner of St. Peter and Bridge Streets, but before 1652 settled where the school house stood on North street.

As writted by "HGT July 1960" "John Symonds of Salem, Mass the early settler of Salem, was granted land there near North River in 1636. On 1/29/1669 aged abiyt 74 years old he disposed in the case of Ingersol vs. Barney (Essex Quarterly Court Files). His family in Salem consisted of a wife Elizabethr and four children (James - he desposed of on 24 June 1685 age 50 Suffolk Court Files no 2339; Catherine married Jacob Towne; Ruth married Job Swinnerton Jr.; and Samuel born in January 1637/38) John's will dated 16 Aug 1671 was proved 19 Sept 1671 (Essex County Probate).

John came from Great Yarmouth Co, Norfolk England and Elizabethr was his second wife. She was perhaps the mother of his younges child Samuel. Dr. Bently in his diary (ed. Essex Institute) notes that he saw the papers inan old law suit of James Symonds (son of John) which stated that John came from Great Yarmouth Co Norfold where he married Ruth Fox.
