About John Talmage

A native of Morristown, New Jersey, John Talmage was born there in 1786. He served as a sergeant in the war of 1812 in Van Dalfsen's regiment of the New York Militia. Around this time he married Rhoda Gardner, also of New Jersey. In 1817 he moved to the Franklin Township in Morrow County Ohio and settled what became known as the "Talmage Farm" for over 50 years (to this day Talmage road still exists). John and Rhoda raised 7 children, 5 boys and 2 daughters.

In Morrow County he engaged in various mechanical professions including carpenter, joiner and cooper. He took a contract to build a methodist "church of the corners" in 1836 and served on their board of trustees. John was also found revenue raising hogs, which wasn't easy given the cold winters and the threat of bears. He would drive hogs to Balitmore where they were weighed, some being over 300 pounds. He moved to Fredericktown in Knox county in 1867 but lived there only 5 months before passing away on December 23, 1867.
