In the name of god amen I John White of Stanton St-Johns in the ___ Oxford Gentleman touched with the consideration of mine owne mortality and not knowing weth__ be pleased to give me so good vse of mine vnderstanding and memory hereafter as (his name be bles___) I now have in this time of mine health do make this my last will and testament in manner and fo__ First I commend my soule into the handes of my gracious Redeemer Jesus Christ by whose satisfaction ___ merits only I trust assuredly to be saved my body I appoint to be buried in the parish church of Stanto' afore___ in such place as mine executors shall thinke convenient. As for my wordly estate and goods I dispose of them as followeth

In primis my desire and will is that first and before all my debts be discharged

Item I give and bequeath to the poore of the parish of Stanton St Johns where I dwell sixe pounds thirteene shillings foure pence

Item I give and bequeath vnto mine eldest sonne Josiah White fourty pounds

Item I give and ___ bequeath vnto my sonne John White twenty pounds

Item I give and bequeath vnto my eldest daughte'r Mary Terry twenty pounds

HISTORY

\n

In 1561, John's uncle, Thomas White, warden of New College, granted John a lease of " the suit and demesne lands of the manor of Stanton St. John," a College estate. This is where he brought his wife Isabel and where their children were born. It is believed that John and Isabel died there. His youngest son Steven succeeded his father in his official positions and also died there.

(John White) Of Stanton St. John, co. Oxford. Lesee of the Manor Farm at

\n

Stanton St. John, probably due to the influence of Thomas White, his uncle ,

\n

Warden of New College, Oxford from 1553 to 1573. The manor belonged

\n

(and still belonged in 1930) to New College. The stone house of the manor

\n

farm was across the main street from the parish church. Stanton St. John is a few miles east of Oxford.

\n

1614/5, 7 Feb: William Cooke "of Credyton in the Countie of Devon, Pastor there and Precher of the worde of God," wrote his will. Bequeaths to his wife Martha "that hundred pounds which remayneth in the hands of Mr. John White my father in lawe and was

\n

promised me in mariage with her." (1) 1616, Sep: John White of St. John

\n

Oxford wrote his will, names his daughter Elizabeth Gardner, and appoints

\n

his son-in-law Thomas Gardner one of the overseers of his will. -------------------- Note: The parish register of Stanton St. John does not begin until 1654.
