John Alexander Winram was born August 1, 1840 in Cincinnati, Ohio and died January 30, 1933 in El Paso, Texas. He married Sarah Belle Boyle, daughter of Edward Boyle and wife Margaret Corrigan, both born in Ireland. John may have served aboard the USS Queen City during the Civil War. His obituary states that he rose to the rank of Lieutenant, but does not name the ship(s) he served on.

He was buried at Masonic Cemetery in El Paso on January, 31, 1933. According to his obituary in the El Paso Herald-News, he had been the next-to-last Union survivor in the El Paso area.
