revolutionary war soldier, enlisted 1777 under capt'n Trussy Moore, endured valley forge. second enlistment 1780, 7th class 4th company, 8th battalion, (listed at PA Archives, 5th series, vol 5 at page 827, under associates and militia, received honorable discharge with pension jan 1837 to june 1841.)
He was one of the descendants of George and Michael Harlan, brothers who came to America with or about same time as William Penn. George&Michael settled in Chester County, PA 1687. Jonathan was born in W. Marlborough Twp, Chester County, PA in 1755. Died June 1841 in Scott Twp., Lawrence County, PA. Buried there in Baptist Church near village of Harlansburg.
Jonathan first married Abigail McCall Harlan at the Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church in Wilmington, DE. Abigail died 10/13/1790 in Kennet Twp and was buried there. He then married Elizabeth Fawcett circa 1790. He left Chester Co, and moved to Washington Co, PA (Now allegheny County) where he lived until 1797. He then moved to Scott Twp, Lawrence Co, PA and settled on 400 acres of land under Dr. Peter Lowery, which includes the present site of Harlansburg, PA. He built the first grist mill and distillery in Lawrence County. he had 11 children.
