Co Yu Hwan and his extended family arrived in the Philippines from Hong Chian, Tong-An in 1861. Soon after his arrival in Manila, he became a Christian and was baptised Jose Cojuangco. With his family settled in Malolos, Jose traveled as a maestro carpentero. In 1896, after working on the church in Paniqui, Tarlac, he chose to move his wife and children to the town, where he invested his earnings in rice and sugar mills.
