About Josef Unzicker (Hunzicker)

Came from Woerth in Alsace along with several brothers.

Leased the Windhof near Ahausen in 1778. This was a princely estate with 201 Morgen (121-181 acres) of tillable land, 39 Morgen (23-35 acres) of meadows, and 8 Morgen (5-7 acres) of gardens. The term of the twelve year lease began on St. Peter's day 1778. The lease contract also included the operation of a distillery for making alchoholic spirits, a sheep farm, and the right to "feeding anf forage" in specified woodlands. The leaseholder was permitted to brew beer. For the

lease fee he had to provide annually 60 Achtel of rye, 60 Achtel or barley, 20 Achtel of oats, and 260 Gulden.

At harvest time the village inhabitants had to help the leaseholder as "enforced laborers" with :the cutting of grain anf the sheaving of shocks", and for this they were to be served bread and beer. The rest of the Mennonite leaseholders "with their wives" had to give guarantees. The contract bears the signatures of the parties concerned together with their seals.
  1. Note: Leased the Netze in 1810.
  2. Note: Descendants still live in Netze today, but they are no longer Mennonite. ®42
