Joseph was born in Pennsylvania. During the Civil War he served in the 32nd Iowa Infantry, Co. E. He was pensioned in 1904 due to an injury to his right thigh. His residence was Galmey at the time.

Joseph was married to Nancy Elizabeth Hawkins of Hickory County. Their children were: William Ollie, Charles Lewis, Arthur Neal and Carl Arthur.
