Family

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bailey-1434 April 2019

Joseph Combs possibly married about 1723 in Stafford County. The name of his wife is not found in any records extant. Some say she was Elizabeth, surname variously said to be Lawrence, Harris or Bailey. No evidence is presented for this identification.

Three known children --

  • John (b bef 1725),
  • Jane (b bef 1727) and
  • Joseph the younger (b bef 1731) --

have been identified through the deeds of gift made by Joseph in 1756. There may have been others, but these three are the only ones known to have survived to adulthood.

Disputed Origins

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Combs-193 April 2019

Joseph Combs is probably not the son of John Combs and Hannah Mason. He is not named in the will of John Combs, dated 11 December 1716 in Hanover Parish, Richmond County, proved 7 February 1716/7. Joseph does not appear in records until 1723 in Stafford County, Virginia Colony. He does appear to have some relationship to the descendants of Archdale Combs, since one of his descendants was named Archdale.[1] This possible connection is still being researched.

It has also been suggested that Joseph was the son of William Combs, son of Archdale Combs.

Death & Legacy

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Combs-193

Although Joseph did not leave a will, he did leave a series of deeds of gift to his three known children near the end of his life.[1]

At a court held for the county of Prince William the 22 day of Apr 1751, this deed was proved by the oath of John De La SHUMATE, John LAWRENCE and Benjamin BULLETT witnesses thereto and admitted to record. On margin: “7 Nov. 1752 Dd. [delivered] Jno. Combs PW.”

(Extracted by Combs Researcher C. Hammett from “Prince William Co, VA Deed Abstracts, 1749-1752, and 1761-1764,” Ruth and Sam Sparacio, Antient Press, McLean, VA)

Note: This is believed to have been John Combs, Sr. of Stafford & Prince William Cos, VA, s/o Joseph Combs I of Stafford Co VA and h/o Seth BULLITT, d/o the above Benjamin BULLITT. See also Edward LAWRENCE in records with Combs in later Fauquier Co, VA. Also note that some researchers have termed the above record a Deed of Gift (not) and claimed (erroneously based on bad assumption?) that Edward LAWRENCE was grandfather of John Combs, Sr.
