About Joseph Draper, US Congress

US Congressman.

A Jacksonian, he represented Virginia's 22nd District for a total of eight months during the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses. Born in what was originally Wythe County, Virginia, he served as a Private during the War of 1812 and became a practicing attorney in Wytheville in 1818. From 1828 to 1830 he was a member of the State Senate. In 1830 Draper ran for the US House of Representatives in both the general election and in a special election to fill the vacancy left by William Smyth, who had died in office. He won the latter and served from December 6, 1830 to March 3, 1831. Charles C. Johnston defeated him for the full term and took his seat after Draper unsuccessfully contested the outcome. Johnston died in an accident in July 1832 and Draper was again specially elected to complete a deceased Congressman's term, serving from December 6, 1832 to March 3, 1833. Not a candidate for renomination, he returned to Wytheville, where he died at 39 the following year
