About Joseph Hammond

Major Joseph Hammond 2, (William 1,) married Kath- erine, widow of William Leighton, of Eliot, and daughter of Nicholas Frost. She was born in 1633.

He removed from Wells fo Eliot in 1669.

In 1671 he received a grant of land from the town, — twenty-five acres on the Piscataqua River, near Franks Fort. Here he built the large Garrison House, which has been taken down within the present century.

He was the Major Commandant of the Militia of York County, several years.

He filled nearly all the Town offices at an early age ; and was the Town Clerk at the time of his death.

He was of the Executive Council nine years ; also Judge of the Court of Common Pleas.

July 6. 1695, while searching for a stray cow near Great Brook, in Eliot, he was captured by the Indians and car- ried to Canada ; he was ransomed in October, and re- turned to his home in the Spring.

He was a man of great integrity and worth, held in high estimation.

He died February 20, 1709-10, aged sixty-three years.

Catherine { Frost-Leighton, ) his wife, died August 15. 1715, aged eighty-two years.
