Mr Joseph Holland Loring, 30, was born on 18 March 1882.
A resident of New York City, Mr Loring boarded the Titanic at Southampton as a first class passenger (ticket number 113801, £45 10s). He was travelling with his brother in law George Rheims.
On the night of the accident Loring and Rheims were in the smoking room having a drink. They had been trying to work out the speed the Titanic was making having followed the daily postings of the ship's run. The men got into discussion with a steward who advised them to increase their estimate as the ship had increased in speed that day, saying that he had got this information from the engine room. When Rheims and Loring looked doubtful he led them to the passageway outside the smoking room and advised them to notice the amount of vibration. Both men agreed the ship did appear to be travelling faster than before.
Joseph Loring lost his life in the sinking. His body, if recovered, was never identified.
