About Joseph Horton

Joseph Horton came to America with his father Barnabas. They first went to Massachusetts and then to Southold on the tip of Long Island. Joseph and his wife Jane moved to Rye, NY where Joseph became a prominent citizen.

Joseph came to America with his father. He resided near his father in Southold for several years after his marriage but about 1664 he moved to Rye, Westchester Co. NY to which place his father-in-law, John Budd had previously gone. In 1671 he was chosen one of the Selectmen of Rye, and about this time he is one of a Committe of three to procure a minister. In 1678 he was a Justice of Peace and also a LT, and then a Capt of a Militia Co. In 1695 he was chosen one of the vestrymen of the church, and in 1699 he was licensed to keep a public house of entertainment.
