Notes Joseph VANN was with Dragging Canoe and his Chickamauga Warriors at Knoxville, and were defeated, having to move their tribes lower into Indian Territory at what is now CHICKAMAUGA. JOSEPH VANN was of this tribe. (Ed. Note This could be either John Joseph VANN or his son, Joseph David VANN, who is about 16 years old in 1779. His father John Joseph VANN is about 48 years old in 1779 - estimations) Sept. 27 1793 - Daniel SMITH Letter to Henry KNOX. Again the Indian command system lost the Chickamauga their last chance to carry their colors to the Clinch River. The command of the Army was shared by Doublehead and Watts. Doublehead was one who dallied along the way to plunder every frontier cabin although a surprise move against Knoxville was the object. Then Doublehead and JOSEPH VANN, also Chickamauga commander lost valuable hours in the early morning in a dispute over whether to take prisoners. To the Honorable National Council of The Cherokee nation "Your petioner Frank HEALD a male aged 45 years represents that he is Cherokee Indian by blood, deriving the same from his mother Mary HEALD whose maiden name was Mary SANSOM, a daughter of Lemiley (sic) SANSOM, whose maiden name was Lemiley VANN, daughter o[UL:f Joe VAN:UL]N, who was a brother of James VANN, who was formerly a Chief. Now your petitioner further states that he has the following family, to wit: his wife Atlanta age 59 years Walter, a male age 19 " John, a male age 17 " Thomas, a male age 15 " Now in accordance with Act 1, Sec 2 of the Cherokee Constitution your Petitioner asks that he be re-admitted to all the rights of other Cherokee in the Cherokee Nation in land and money and herewith presents Affidavits as to the identity of responsible parties undersigned.
