Joseph Marion Nichols was a spy for the North during the Civil War and later worked for the Federal Government as a representative to the Indians in Mississipi. His family lived in Choctaw Co., AL.
Three of Joseph's brothers served in the Confederate Army. One was killed in action and another died in a Union prison camp.
Joseph drowned under suspicious circumstances in the Tombigbee River, Alabama. (Note; draw your own conclusion).
