By the census records of Owen county Indiana James M. and Joseph Howe Mckee entered the county sometime after the 1830 census was taken and it is said they arrived from Pulaski and Scott counties Kentucky.

They came to Indiana in 1839 and settled near Freedom, Owen, In. He was a millwright having spent seven years as an apprentice and following this trade all his life being considered one of the best mechanic in the state. He worked of 75 cents a day and furnished his own tools. He was an active member in the Church of Christ, as was his wife. Joseph was an Elder at the time of his death. He has been Justice of Peace for twenty years and was regarded as a man without blemish on his character. His wife was woman of the best type and possessed rare than ordinary industry having manufactured the cloth from wool and flax for clothing of her entire family for many years.

McKee Rec’d. for Record July 16th 1842                                                           This Indenture made this sixth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty two between John Betchel and Eve Bechtel, the wife of said John of the county of Owen & state of Indiana of the one part and Joseph H. McKee, of the county of Owen & state aforesaid of the other part Witnesses that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of forty dollars lawful money of the United States to them in hand paid, by the said party of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by the said party of the first part hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth want bargain and sell unto the said party of the second part and his heirs and assigns forever all that tract or parcel of land to wit: sixteen acres and two thirds on an acre off of the east side of the North West quarter of the North West quarter of Section number twenty in township nine north of Range four west by running a line paralleled with the section line through said quarter , s__ as to include the above quantity of acres & parts of an acre, the above land is situated in Owen county Indiana  To have and to hold the above described premises hereby sold & conveyed unto the said Joseph H. McKee his heirs and assigns forever together with all & singular the apportenances there to belonging or in any wise appertaining to his own proper use & behoof.  And the said John Bechtel for himself his heirs executors & administrators, the aforesaid lot or tract of land and appurtenances to the said Joseph McKee his heirs executors and administrators against the claim or claims of all and every person whatever will warrant & forever Defend. McKee and Lucinda McKee his wife Owen county in the State of Indiana Convey and Warrant to Corsham Vlict of Owen County in the State of Indiana for the sum of four hundred dollars the receipt whereof hereby acknowledge the following real Estate in Owen county in the state of Indiana to-wit: The South West quarter of the South West quarter of section 18 (18) in Township number nine (9) north of range No. four (4) West containing forty acres more or less with all the privileges thereunto belonging.
