About Joseph Norris


Joseph Norris I was born 20 February 1705/6. He removed to Hartford Co, then Balto. Co Md. He married Mary Talbot about 1734. He inherited part of "Prospect" from his father. He sold this land in 1753 to John Bond for 50 pds. He had twelve children: Elizabeth, John, Rachel, Susannah, Mary, Hannah, Joseph II, Willimen, Benjamin, Edward, Temperance, and James. He died testate. His will was written 2 April 1781 and probated 14 May 1784 in Baltimore County, later Hartford County, Md.

. "moved to Baltimore co., Md. with his brothers. He was devised 126 acres of land, a part of "Prospect". He sold this land to John Bond 6 Mar. 1753 for 50 pounds, the whole, 243 acres...part of sd being the late dwelling plantation of Jos. Norris & devised to sd Joseph by...will of his father, John Norris, of Anne Arundel co. Joseph dtd his will 2 Apr. 1781 & it was probated 14 May 1784, Baltimore county. He does not name all his children."

"He removed to Harford co. and then Baltimore co. Md.  He inhertied part of the estate 'Prospect' from his father, and he sold this land in 1753 to John Bond for 50 lbs sterling.His will was dated 2 Mar. 1781 and was probated in Baltimore co., Md. in 1784.... 

Says under Priscilla Norris d/o Aquila and Priscilla Temperance Norris that she married Benjamin Norris s/o Joseph and Elizabeth (Cole) Norris s/o Joseph and Mary Norris and that he is son of William and Martha (Hubbard nee Norris) Norris.

But on page 5 if you follow the lineage back for his father Joseph and Elizabeth (Cole) Norris it is listed as follows: s/o Joseph and Mary Norris and that he is the s/o John and Elizabeth (Parson) Norris s/o Edward and Mary (Freeman) Norris who is s/o Thomas and Ann (Hynson) Norris. Nothing further is found on the family of Joseph and Elizabeth (Cole) Norris in this book."

This work is not documented. " Joseph inherited by will of his father a part of "prospect' (126 acres) On 6 Mar. 1753 he sold this land to John Bond for fifty lbs sterling "The whole, 243 acres...the part aforesaid being the late dwelling plantation of said Joseph Norris and devised to said Joseph by...will of his father, John Norris, of Anne Arundel county."....His will as follows: Baltimore County April 2, 1781 May 14 1784. To son Joseph, Jr. Tract 'Norris Wonder' 100 acres, also part of tract 'Norris Adventure' 22 acres, and certificate containing 80 acres called 'Norris Addition' also a certificate called 'Chance'. "The rest of my personal estate to be equally divided to my children as follows - Edward, John, Joseph, Elizabeth Bosley, Rachel Vaughn, Willimine Bosley and Walter Wyle's six children to have one child's part that he had by Susannah Norris and Wm. Sinclare's daughter, Willimina Sinclare to have one child's part. Executors Edward, John and Joseph Norris."
