http://alotofstuff.info/DeWeese/SmallBiographies.htm Joseph Everett Nourse graduated from Jefferson College in 1837: was principal of Rittenhouse Academy, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1840; was professor of Ethics and English studies at the U. S. Naval Academy, 1850-1864; was commissioned Professor of Mathematics in the U. S. Navy in 1864; was on duty at the Naval Observatory, 1865-1880. He was licensed to preach in the Presbyterian Church in 1849 and held services at Fort Adams, Rhode Island, during the Civil War, also later in the District of Columbia, and in Virginia. He was the U. S. representative at the International Geographic Congress at Paris, France, in 1875. He published several professional Books.
