About Joseph Bradford Sargent

Joseph Bradford Sargent, 3rd child of Joseph Denny Sargent and Mindwell Jones, dau. of Phineas Jones and Lucy BALDWIN, was b. Dec.14,1822; m. Jan. 17,1848, with ELIZABETH COLLIER LEWIS (b. Jan. 14,1829; d. Sept. 25,1874; dau. of Curtis),  m. 2ND, on Apr. 22,1878, with FLORENCE WINCHESTER von KARAJAN (b. Feb.9,1848; dau. of Theodore Thomas Nicholas von Karajan); they res. New Haven, Conn.

Joseph Bradford Sargent began his professional life in Boston in 1839, and a few years later went to Georgia, where he married for the 2nd time. In 1849 he rem. to New York City, and became a commission merchant.

Engaging in manufacturing in 1850, he soon after took into partnership with his brothers George H. and Edward. Their manufacturing and commerical interests was established in New York City as Sargent & Company. Relocating to New Britain,Conn. under the name J.B. Sargent & Company but unable to expand as they wished, the company moved again to New Haven and New York City. The company specialized in locks and hardware until 1972 when they merged with Walter Kidde & Company of Beleville, NJ; a manufacturer of safety,security and protection products. He retired from active business in 1887.

After filling various positions of trust in New Haven, he became its mayor from 1891-1895, and ws nominated as the Democratic candidate for Governor.After his death in 1907, his brother George Stewart Sargent became president.

Note: Sargent was a pioneer in the hiring of Italian immigrants and women.
