Joseph William Crow was among the Thomasites, a group of 1,074 American teachers sent by the U.S. government to the Philippines between 1901 and 1902. The Thomasites sought to establish a new public school system, to teach basic education and to train Filipino teachers, with English as the medium of instruction. Joseph was first assigned in Nabua, Camarines Sur and then to Iloilo where he fell in love with Asuncion de Ocampo, a Filipina from Capiz, Iloilo -- they married in 1910. By 1915, he was serving as the Provincial Treasurer of Batangas. Joseph and his family became prominent members of Manila society at the height of the American Occupation.
