About Joshua Small

Joshua owned a tannery in a marshy field in Scarborough. The land adjoined his brothers and his log house was opposite the house of Capt. John, his brother. He eventually set up large tanneries in Scarborough.

He was a surveyor for Scarborough. He owned much land and for many he did legal business of early settlers of the town of Limington. Joshua was the moderator of the first town meeting of Limington when it was incorporated. One decision voted on at the meeting was that hogs should not run at large. He was also elected as "leather-sealer". He became a powerful man for the good in the frontier settlement.
