About Juan Fresqui

Alférez Juan Fréqui gave his age as 36 on 10 Oct 1661.

Juan Luján ("el viejo") gave tesitmony on 29 Oct 1661 refuting an accusation by Governor Diego López Mendizábal that Juan Fresqui's mother was a black slave. Luján testified that Juan Frésqui's father was "flamenco," meaning Flemish, and that Fresqui's mother was "blanca" or white.

Capítan Juan Frésqui was dead by 1667, and had been Alcalde Mayor of Isleta. Although there were no adult male Frésqui in the 1680-1681 Revolt lists, several people of this name after the Reconquest give proof that some minor children or grandchildren of his escaped the massacre.

Two of his daughters were Juana Frésqui and Magdalena Frésqui. Juana who was married to José de Leyva and was killed in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Her two daughters were rescued from captivity in 1692 by a relative, Juan Holguín...
