About Juan Monica Mercado

Juan Mercado lived in a large stone house in the center of Biñan, Laguna; and was known as "Capitan Juan". Like his father, Juan served as the town's capitan del pueblo (in 1808, 1813, and 1823). On many occasions, “Capitan Juan”, as his town mates referred to him, was the hermano mayor in religious and social affairs. Like his wife, he was benevolent and hardworking.

As a result of Napoleon's invasion of Spain, the Spanish King Ferdinand VII sought to appease his Filipino subjects, and in a new constitution framed in 1812, the Philippines was to be represented in the Spanish Cortes. Juan's status earned him the privilege of being one of the electors to determine this Philippine representative.

For the first time in the history of this migrant clan, Juan declared his family as "indios" for tax purposes -- cementing his loyaltty to his grandfather's adopted home.

Juan married Cirila Alejandra, with whom he had 12 children -- seven boys and five girls.
