About Juliann Malina Stevens

Juliann married her first cousin, Charles Edmond Nelson, who was the son of her aunt Mary Catherine Welker (her mother's sister) and Mary Catherine's husband, Thomas Billington Nelson. Juliann was previously married briefly to William Henry Dustin, who I think was also one of her cousins. I was told that she jumped out of the buggy she was riding in with William Dustin on their wedding day, and never lived with him, but I don't know if that's true.

William Henry Dustin and Mary Ardella Patterson had been married four years when they first came to Garden City in 1875. Mary remained childless. Some say they had a son born about 1875, but the child died. Those first years must have been hard for Mary with William having to work such long days. Having no children may have been a factor in the decision for William to take a second wife. William Henry Dustin and Juliann Stevens were married 7 August 1876, in the Salt Lake, Endowment House. William was almost twenty-five years old, and Julia thirteen years old. The marriage did not last. They were divorced, but the sealing was never revoked.

One family tradition says that after they were married and came out of the Endowment House, Julia wanted to ride in the front seat, but Mary, his first wife told Juliann that she must sit on the back seat of the buggy, because it was the rules of plural marriage for the first wife to ride in the front seat with her husband. Juliann stubbornly refused to get in the back seat, and sat down on a rock by the Endowment House. That was the last time they ever saw her. She divorced William, but did not have the sealing canceled. William expressed to his children that he felt very badly about this. Van Dustin stated that his father said, “She didn’t want anything to do with us!”

About three years later, in 1879, Julia Stevens married her first cousin, Charles Edmond Nelson, the son of Thomas Billington Nelson and Mary Catherine Welker, Julia's aunt. Juliann Stevens and Charles Edmond Nelson later moved to Arizona where Juliann died in 1893. It appears she died the day after her son Charles was born on November 19th.

The information below was found on Find A Grave.com:

Juliann Malina Welker Stevens was the fourth child of Rebecca Welker and Alexander Roswell Stevens. Her mother died at Juliann's birth.

Juliann Stevens and Charles Edmond Nelson later moved to Arizona where Juliann died in 1893. It appears she died the day after her son Charles Alexander Nelson was born 19 November 1893. The sad fact is that mother and daughter had both died, at almost the same age, in childbirth with their 4th child.
