About Julius Mark

Julius Mark (27. märts 1890 Idavere, Haljala kihelkond – 2. märts 1959 Washington) oli eesti keeleteadlane. Ta oli ajakirja Eesti Keel peatoimetaja ja Õpetatud Eesti Seltsi esimees. Tema algatusel võttis Õpetatud Eesti Selts töökeelena kasutusele eesti keele. Julius Mark oli uurali keeleteaduse professor Tartu Ülikoolis 1919–1944. Aastal 1938 määrati ta Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia algkoosseisu ning ta valiti selle asepresidendiks. Aastal 1923 kaitstud doktoriväitekiri käsitles läänemeresoome keelte omastusliiteid. Julius Mark oli Lauri Kettuse õpilane.

Linguist. 903 – 1907 Rakvere City School (Rakvere Linnakool), 1908 – 1911 Tallinn Aleksander Gymnasium (Tallinna Aleksandri Gümnaasium), 1911-1912 studied Indo-European comparative and classical linguistics in the University of Tartu. 1912-1915 studied Finno-Ugric comparative linguistics and folklore in the University of Helsinki, Finland. 1918 Cand. Phil., 1919 M. Phil., 1923 Ph.D. in Finno-Ugric linguistics from the University of Helsinki, Finland. Participated in WWI and Estonian War of Independence. 1919-1944 professor of Uralic linguistics in the University of Tartu. Dean of the Department of Philosophy in 1924-1925, 1938-1939, 1942-1944. 1922 – 1924 chief editor of magazine “Eesti keel” („Estonian Language“). Left Estonia in 1944, lived in Germany 1944-1945 and taught Finno-Ugric languages in Halle university. 1945-1947 lived in Denmark, 1947 moved to USA. 1947 – 1948 and 1948- 1949 visiting lecturer in Harvard University, taught Russian language. From 1951 taught Finnish language in Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Chairman of the Learned Estonian Society 1929 – 1936, 1938 – 1940 vice president of Estonian Academy of Sciences. Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, member of Kalevala Society (Finland), member of Finno-Ugric Society, member of Estonian Scientific Association in USA.
