About Justin Jared Merrill

Justin Jared Merrill was born February 18, 1806, in Byron, Genesee, New York, and was the son of Samuel Merrill and Phoebe Odell. He married Annie Lovina Manchester, 23 Sept. 1826, Henriette, Monroe, New York. She died about 1840. Their children were Mortimer Merrill, Ferdinand Daniel Merrill, Editha Melissa Merrill, William Wallace Merrill, Mandana Rebecca Merrill.

Justin then married Camilla Wirick, 1840, in Paw Paw, Lee, Illinois, and they had the following children: George Gee Merrill, Justin Jared Merrill, Maryetta Merrill, Jacob Merrill, Lucy Ann Merrill, Julia Merrill, James Merrill, Jedediah Merrill, Samuel Jared Merrill, Morgan Merrill, Permenio Merrill, Emily Merrill, Parmelia Merrill

Justin's father and mother come to Utah in 1847 and settled in the 19th ward of Salt Lake City. He came to Utah in September 1848 in the Willard Richards Company. His eldest son Ferdinand, and his brother Philemon were members of the Mormon Battalion. Philemon was a general in the Mormon battalion. His sister Phoebe Lodemia accompanied it part of the way as a washerwoman and cook, although she was only fourteen. His mother died in 1863 and his father died 1877. His father is buried in Salt Lake Cemetery. He died at his father's home in Salt Lake City

Justin Merrill was born February 18, 1806, at Byron, Genessee County, New York. He and his wife Camilla Wirick Merrill came to Utah September 1848, with the Willard Richards Company. They established a home at Smithfield, Cache County, Utah and helped to pioneer this area. He was called to the Las Vegas Mission in 1856 where his knowledge of farming and raising fine horses was needed. Upon his release he returned to Smithfield where he died January 14, 1887.
