About Karl Simon

Karl was born on July 5, 1884, in Werlte, Osnabrück, Hanover, Germany. He married Selma Katz and they moved to Cloppenburg, where Karl raised and sold dray horses. He and Selma had four daughters. Karl was taken from his home on Kristallnacht, then released. He, Selma, and daughters Edith and Ilse were passengers on the ill-fated SS St. Louis and were sent to Holland after all their belongings had been unloaded in Havana Harbor. They were interned in Arnem and Westbork camps before their final deportation to Sobibor, with Edith narrowly escaping and surviving. See, p. 7, for details, as described by daughter Hildegard.
