About Kristianna Oline Folkestad (Olsen Sundsfjord)

In English:

Kristianne Oline Sundsfjord was Ole and Elises only girl. She was born June 21th 1903.

As a 17-year-old she worked a winter as a housewife at a boarding school when the housewife here was sick. Otherwise, she worked a lot on Neraas farm in Sund.

Kristianne then went south, first to Trondheim. The Travel coffin she had with her was made from her father's hand. This coffin is currently owned by Kristianne’s daughter Betzy. The coffin bears the inscription "1923" and it was at this year she traveled south.

Kristianne will be remembered for her warm sense of humor. It is said that she and a friend were once thrown out of the Catholic Church in Trondheim because of their unstoppable laughing between themselves. After them came a nun with a broom. We do not know if they were chased, but it could be. Kristianne had a difficulty to stop when she first began to laugh.

In Trondheim, she worked as a cook with a family named Buch. From Trondheim she later went to the farm Skjøttelvik in Hurum. Here on the Hoff farm she worked as a cook. Here she became gradually acquainted with the man she later married. This man was Alf Folkestad. Alf drove a taxi and worked with the local sheriff and priest when they were in need of driving. The couple married in 1930 and later bought the farm Lysemhyr in Hurum.

There was always an open house in Lysemyhr. Kristianne created and spread a lot of happiness. Many people were helped with food from the farm during the Second World War. She had an exceptional good memory and read a lot for the children. Many travel essays were read out loud to children and she gave geography lessons from these stories. She also told about the Kings in Europe and gave lessons on Biblical History.

Kristianne and Alf struggled a lot together to build up the farm, since the previous owner had let it lapse. Alf built the barn and stable himself. The farmhouse was only 5 years old when they bought the farm.
