He is Supposed to have come form Dandugama area to Katana with his mother.
He lived oposit Bahirawa Farm former James Fdo's White Hall. in a cadjan
hut. His job as a coconut plucker earned him half a coconut per tree.
At the end of every tiring day he would boil a pot of water for his mothers bath,
and she implored the gods "Umbata Hatharamaha Nidhanaya Labaywa" (May you unearth a
pot of Gold).
And this came true. When the Mahagedara was built, the site of the hut was preserved
as a room within the new building with the original clay & dung floor.
An Egg used to be placed in this room and found missing overnight, swollowd by the Cobra
who guarded his Wealth. The classic case, is of a woman worker, whose depature was
obstructed by the Cobra until she put away the stolen vegitables from her bag,
then she got free passage.
He purchased from a Government Auction, 2000 acres of
Jungle Land at Waradala, for planting Cocnut. At the Auction the British Government Agent
insisted on seeing his money before bidding as he did not look an affluent man.
From a concealed compartment in his Bullock Cart he produced a bag of Gold Coins.
These lands were to go down the family tree without being sold ("under Fedaicommissum
which was abolished in Sri Lanka 1972) He was a Mdthodisht. "A History of the Methodist
Church in Ceylon 1814 to 1964" Page 253 states that "A church and a school at Katana
were presented to the Mission by Mr. Marcus Fernando in 1888 and it further states that a
chruch in Matara was built by him
