About Laban Ainsworth

Laban Ainsworth was the son of Capt. William Ainsworth and wife Mary Marcy. He was born July 19, 1757 in Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut, and died in Jaffrey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, on March 16, 1858, living to be just over 100 years of age. He is buried at the Old Burying Ground, Jaffrey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.

Laban attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1778, as a licensed minister. He served one campaign with McKinstry's Corps in the Hudson River area during the American Revolution. He preached at Spencertown, New York after leaving McKinstry. He became the first minister for Jaffrey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire on December 10, 1782, and served that church for 76 years.

Laban married Mary Minot on December 4, 1787. Mary was the daughter of Jonas Minot and wife Mary Hall. She was born in Concord, Massachusetts on February 1, 1761 and died February 3, 1845. Laban and Mary had two children, William and Sarah. At the age of 83, Laban attended a Dartmouth commencement with son William (Dartmouth Class of 1811) to see his grandson Frederick Smith Ainsworth graduate, July 1840.

  1. Sarah Ainsworth, born March 23, 1789, married Isaac Parker of Keene, New Hampshire, and died May 29, 1857. They relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where Isaac became a noted merchant.
  2. William Ainsworth, born August 24, 1792, married Mary Morse Stearns, died June 14, 1842. Attorney, banker, representative to state legislature.
