Catherine, the first Countess of Nottingham, was a favorite with Queen Elizabeth I. When Catherine died at a young age in February 1603, the Queen “fell into a deep melancholy and herself died March 20th.”[9] --------------------

  Katherine Carey was the daughter of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon of Hunsdon and Ann Morgan.1,3 She married Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham, son of William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham and Margaret Gamage, circa July 1563.4 She died on 25 March 1603.
    Her married name became Howard. As a result of her marriage, Katherine Carey was styled as Baroness Howard of Effingham on 21 January 1573.
