About Laverne West

Lavern was the brother of Earl West and they were very much alike. Lavern lived to the age of 102. He was a member of a very elite group, having been alive in three centuries. Lavern also had red hair and he was tall and handsome. He spent his life in the mountains, farming stock, raising, and building. He was married first to Edith Adelma "Delma" West (Colvin) and they had seven children. After Lavern deserted his family with Delma and they divorced, he later married Clara Cody and had five more children when he was already well into his 50's. Wherever there was work to do he puts his hand to the plow, whether it be for a livelihood or for the church or good causes.

Lavern West, 102, died Nov. 6, 2000. He was born May 16,1898 at Woodland, which is now Lakeside, to Samuel Ezra and Julia Ellsworth West. He began his elementary education in the little school house there. He attended high school in Snowflake. His father raised sheep and was in the mercantile business so Laverne learned at an early age to take good care of livestock. which he did for most of his life in the cattle business. He had also been in the dairy business in the Salt River Valley for several years. For many years, Laverne had hounds for hunting mountain lions and whenever a rancher had a lion problem, Laverne was called to take care of it.

He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a missionary for most of his life, especially to the Indian people of the White Mountain Apache Tribe. He had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. He is survived by four sons, Norman L. West of Lakeside, Ernie R. West of Forest Dale, Marion M. West of Forest Dale and Edmond L. West of Provo, Utah; four daughters, Bernadine Fish of Mesa, Verna Dell Browning of Mesa, Sonja Hall of Bosque Farms, N.M., and Claralynn Merino of Mesa; 27 grand 1 children; 75 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. He also raised several foster children.

He was preceded in death by his wife Clara and a son Samuel Cody West (plus two other children with Delma, a daughter, Ruby, and son, Wilford, who died in 1929 at very young ages from meningitis). Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at Show Low Downtown Chapel, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There will be a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 10 at Owens Mortuary in Show Low and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be at the Lakeside Cemetery. Owens Mortuary of Show Low handled arrangements.
