About Lazarus Manley
Lazarus Manley (son of George Manley and Elizabeth Basstone) was born Oct 10, 1668 in Talaton, Devonshire, England, and died Mar 1748/49 in Mansfield, Tolland Co, Connecticut, USA. He married (1) Sarah Hartshorn on Feb 26, 1700/01 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co. Massachusetts, daughter of Thomas Hartshorn and Sarah Swan. He married (2) Mary Torrey on 1738, daughter of Josiah Torrey and Sarah Willson.
He worked as a mill owner and millwright, included planning and building mills, setting up their machinery, and maintaining them.
From the book Colonial Ancestors: Four Lineal Genealogies of Eastern Connecticut (1991):
"Lazarus' eldest two children were born in Boston and the next two, it is thought, lived in Southold, Long Island, NY. Lazarus went there in 1706 to develop a grist mill; per Southold Town Records 25 Oct 1706. Their house is still in use today at west end of Southold corner of Ackerly Pond Road and Lower Road. They remained in Southold for a little more than seven years. The house was still standing into the 1990s as a private home at the west end of Southold on the corner of Ackerly Pond Road and Lower Road. About 1713, he moved to Windham, CT, where his father-in-law was."
Research of Jean Hubbard Lorenz says Lazarus and Sarah Manley went from Charlestown to Walpole, Mass and then to Coventry, Connecticut, where in 1725 Lazarus bought a sawmill and thirty acres of land. In 1732 William Manley of Boston died, leaving large bequests to
"my Loving Brother Lazarus Manley of Coventry in Connecticut Millwright & to his son William Manley of Wethersfield of Sd Connecticut Joyner..."
Lazarus Manley died in Mansfield, Conn. a few miles from Coventry in 1749. Inventory of his estate, consisting of clothing, household goods, notes upon several relatives, 5 sheep, etc., was made 14 March 1749 and amounted to 428 pounds, 3 shillings, 2 pence. No date has been found for the death of his first wife, Sarah Hartshorn. He was married for a second time to Mary (Torrey) Southworth, who survived him. His son John was administrator of his estate.
Again from Colonial Ancestors:
"Since Lazarus' life and work demonstrates so much in advance planning, as in his mill development projects, it hardly seems accidental that he died without a will. His purpose must have been to build up his children, particularly his sons, at the time they reached an age of independence, and to distribute the bulk of his estate well before the time of his death. His son, George, acted in a similar fashion."
