About Leonard Ryon Lewis

Biographical Summary:

"...After i was pretty well grown i went to Utah (he lived in Mesa, Arizona) and spent a summer visiting our old home and relatives. My brother Malin, was attending the Agricultural school in Logan and i decided to go. After six months at Logan, I went to Valparaiso, Indiana to go to school; but father took sick about that time and i returned home to help care for him.

When i came from school i was very interested in religion and all the rest of my life have been devoted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints. About that time i met a lovely girl Alice Beatrice Hurst with whom I fell in love. We were married 6 November 1895 in Mesa, Arizona.

After father died "I received a part of the ranch. I built a house on my part and four of my six children were born there. In 1897 I was called on a mission to the southern states. Alice and our baby, LaRee, accompanied me to Salt Lake City and we went through the temple and we were married for life and eternity and had our baby sealed to us.

After my return (from the mission) I began farming again. My brother Dudley, and i bought, machinery and went into custom harvesting. In 1911 i went out of the cattle business due to a severe drought. The next year the drought broke, the rains came in abundance, and the dessert was green, grass and flowers were knee high.

In 1917 we acquired a beautiful spot in the lovely Sierra Ancha Mountains, fifty miles north of Globe , Arizona. We began to first build a summer home, later developed it into a summer resort - called "The Lewis Log Cabin Lodge." As Automobiles and roads improved the resort was very popular. After World War 1 We sold our home in Mesa and moved to the resort in Gila County."

His daughter Clarice wrote- "He was a kind and generous father, always appreciative, cheerful and uncomplaining. He died as he lived, at peace with the lord and the world and was able to take everything he possessed with him..."
