OBITUARY
Letty May Banister, the second of four children, was born to Ida Lena Kittel and Obediah Buck Admire Banister Aug. 7, 1901 at Bird City, Kan., and died Aug. 26, 1999 at the Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kan.
The Banister family lived in Bird City a number of years but later moved to a farm south of St. Francis, where Letty attended Lawnridge School for three years before they moved to McDonald, Kan.
Letty graduated in 1920 from McDonald High School. She earned a normal training certificate by attending summer school in Atwood and St. Francis and taught five years in various country schools.
Floyd Earl Craig and Letty May Banister were united in marriage June 23, 1925, at Goodland, Kan. To this union one daughter, Ardith Nadine, was born. Floyd and Letty lived in McDonald for four years. In 1929, they moved to a farm four and one-half miles northeast of McDonald where they resided for more than 60 years. They "retired" from farm living in the late 1980's and moved into a home in McDonald where they enjoyed close neighbors and town activities.
Floyd died in November of 1991. They had celebrated 66 years of happy marriage.
Letty continued to live in McDonald until 1995, when she broke her hip while visiting her daughter and son-in-law in Garden City. Following surgery, she became a resident of Garden Valley Retirement Village, where she was close to her family and enjoyed the fellowship and care provided by the facility's loving staff until her death.
Letty was a member of the Doric Chapter of Eastern Star, a charter member of the North Divide Farn Bureau Club and the Ladies Guild of the McDonald Federated Church. She loved to read, play games and make afghans and, in earlier years with her husband, was an active square dance participant. She was, however, first and foremost, a homemaker and loving parent, grandparent and aunt. The farm was "second honme" to grandchildren and nieces and nephews where Letty always prepared special treats, such as homemade noodles and oatmeal-cookies.
In later years, she especially enjoyed her great-grandchildren. They played games together and Letty never "let" them win and always demanded that they played "fair."
Letty was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; one brother; her husband; one granddaughter; and a grandson-in-law.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter and son-in-law, Charles and Ardith Stones, granddaughter Judith Ridder and her financee, Richard Steinbrink, great-granddaughters Melissa and Mekayla Ridder; Granddaughter and grandson-in-law Gaynelle and David Beasley and granddaughters, Brynn and Britny Dawson, all of Garden City, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were held Aug 30, at the McDonald Federated Church with the Rev. Greg Moyer officiating. Interment was in Grae Cemetery, McDonald
Memorials may be given to the Federated Church of McDonald.
