Macon County,NC Land Records for Levi Ray: March 11, 1845 - Levi Ray entered 60 acres on the waters of Iotla Creek, Joining Richard Clampett and his own lands. August 16, 1852 - - Levi Ray entered 25 acres, joining John Wild and Samuel Wilson. May 10, 1859 - Land Grant No. 2281, Levi Ray, 50 acres on Burningtown Creek, Entered 10-1-1853, Reg. 6-5-1860.July 21,1877 - Malinda Ray enters 100 acres on the waters of Burningtown Creek, Joining her home lands. LAND PURCHASES: Sept. 3, 1852 - John Wild sold 65 acres to Levi Ray for $65 on Burningtown Creek. March 6, 1857 -William Deweese sold Levi Ray 50 acres on the waters of Burnigtown Creek, March 6, 1857 William Deweese sold 50 acres to Levi Ray, for $10. There are two accounts of Levi's death. One told by Wayne Ford of Clay County who knew the Susan Ray Beach family well. During the Civil War members of the Home Guard were looking for a deserter and they say Levi walking across his barnyard, and mistook him for the man they were searching for. Levi did not hear well, and he did not heed the call of the Home Guard, and he was shot in the back and killed. The other account was told by Gertrude Ray Mason, d/o Harvey P. Ray, and she said that she had heard Malinda Deweese Ray tell of Levi's death. Levi was in the Civil War and had come home for the birth of their daughter, Martha, and as he was carrying firewood into the kitchen, he was shot and fell onto the kitchen floor where he died. (No record has been found of Levi being in the Civil War.)
